Where, Why, How? (Part 2#)
Where, have you been?

40,000 miles, 332 rides and 0$ ago I sat on a bridge in Mexico overlooking an intimidating landscape of concrete jungle and per ma smog and pondered another insane challenge I had joyfully composed for myself while in one of my highly productive daydreaming episodes. From our starting point on the Mexico/California border  I would soon put everything I could conjure into hitchhiking a jagged circle around all of North and South America and beyond. Our ultimate goal being to document the adventure utilizing a few select tools, a load of faith in human nature and our ability to overcome any obstacle this world could invoke on our behalf.

While it would be impossible to fairly represent the last years travels in one succinct little paragraph, I would like to encourage all of you new readers to catch up by reading some of  the now archived stories that took place through 2008. For those of you that have been following along for awhile now, please click below on the (Read More) button and we will take a closer look at some of the behind the scenes action that has made this project possible.

A crucial element to this whole process has been and will continue to be the creative organizing that has helped us put together a growing team of highly skilled volunteers, artists, and accomplices that have congregated in a unified effort to create a truly "no budget," grassroots, independent production. Long before the first thumb was ever glimpsed by a passing vehicle, we faced the challenge of pulling together all of the necessary tools, skills and financing to ensure our eventual success. We needed a website, cameras, computers and an array of survival gear to ensure a epic, unfiltered end result. Well aware that to pull the desired network and tools together  a compelling plan of action and a web portal to promote the dream would be required. We extended our feelers through our individual networks and within days we were holding court with owners of Quiet Waters Media Inc. Dometheus Nash and  Asana Draper in Boise ID. These visionary multimedia experts were more than just understanding of our future potential  and helped us realize the very first step by donating a dedicated support network and home base of sorts for our website and subsequent portal to the global community.

That initial gift opened a flood gate of support for our North American hitchhiking adventure and has since given us the ability to include a growing number of team members, financial supporters and well wishers that have kept this project rolling for the last year regardless of countless logistical scrapes we have found ourselves in. This web presence was a key step in promoting and drawing continued support from a small army of individuals that wanted to contribute. We will take this opportunity to recognize these two very special team members for being the first to believe in our project at a time when many others laughed and thought it to be an impossible pipe dream. We have since proved the naysayers wrong, having traveled all of North America on not but a smile and a shoestring, logging over 150 hours of shockingly dynamic footage. Along the way we have been consistently honored to add some of the most talented people we have ever met to the growing list of resources compelled to add a personal touch to the project. Over the next couple of months we will be introducing you to as many of these individuals as we can through our blog, so stay tuned.

As many of you have noticed we are jumping into 2009 with a brand new website that has been significantly upgraded to full web 2.0. status, this upgrade was made possible through yet another donation made by two leaders in the progressive marketing firm that is the Third Party Media Alliance of Tuscon AZ. Owners Pablo and Leslie Blye have been an invaluable resource to us and have given freely of their unique expertise in an effort to reach a  much broader world wide audience. In addition to advanced marketing support  we have gained two lifelong friends and an aggressive new vision for what we will call "Travel Tech," a term that we hope to help coin through the use of technology that will someday transform the traveling members of Dirty Mule Productions into walking, talking real time explorers that you can follow every step of the way, wherever you or we may be on the planet.

Our next post we will be presenting you with a detailed description of our ideas regarding "Travel Tech" and how these new technologies could potentially affect our understanding of travel in the future. No, were not talking about time portals, although  you can rest assured that back at the lab we are getting very, very close. However what we will be discussing is, how to someday bring our web audience real time footage from the road, Improved camera angles through weather resistant body cams, GPS/Satellite tech., solar charging apparatus and much much more. We want to hear your opinions and ideas on the subject so please sign in, leave your comments and help us grow.

Remember each and every one of you is greatly appreciated! From your filthy friends here at Dirty Mule Productions. Peace!

Good question Tarra. It took us quite awhile to figure out the most functional and efficient way to keep our gear safe from moisture, dings and of course theft. What we found to work the best for the PC was a padded sleeve wrapped in a dry sack stuffed deep in the pack. This worked well for almost 30,000 miles until we encountered hurricane season down South, I guess that means back to the drawing board for the next trip, huh?

Our hard drive storage units and all the camera accessories we carry are stored in a Pelican case which is stored at the bottom of the pack and only accessed when offloading footage every week or so.

The actual cameras were the hardest thing to protect, so far we have decided that having the camera in hand at all times worked best, easy access keeps us primed for the numerous filming opportunities that arise every day. Believe it or not, we have found that plastic contractor bags work better than anything else when it comes to moisture protection and easy access. Of course this tactic leaves us a little more exposed to theft than we would like but, what do ya do?

So far the closest thing to theft we have encountered has been the occasional overzealous cop that has no issue banging our cameras around while harassing us, or the occasional hard look we get while walking through questionable neighborhoods.

The Toughbook laptops you speak of are very high on our wish lists but they come with a pretty hefty price tag. Of course sponsorship is an option, believe me we are working diligently on that one already.

Thanks again for the question Tarra we really appreciate your interaction on the new site.

Getting the blog back up may seem like a simple task but given our fluxuating circumstances things took a little longer than we would have liked, sorry... we hope next time we can be more efficient and of course we are constantly looking for better ways to keep people informed in a more conveniant fashion, If any of you have i
  • spacejunk : Looks like you guys finally have the blog up and running again. What happened there?
  • dirtymule : Hi growman, the SR11 shoots in full HD,has a 60GB hard drive and is progressive in almost every function. Beyond the moderate price point and functionality   our primary reasons for choosing it were durability and compactness, two things that were mandatory for a project like our's. It does have issues operating in Vista, but so far that is my only complaint. Overall; Best Prosumer level camera I have ever owned.
  • growmangrow : I heard a rumor your team uses the Sony HDR SR11, What do you think about its performance?
